Divorce Checklist

Divorce may have been thrust upon you from out of the blue in which case you will be in a state of shock and most likely not in a fit mental position to set an orderly action plan or list. It is often the case that immediate professional guidance will help you to put into perspective what is really happening and help you to formulate a view as to what you should do. Both to ensure that you act in a principled manner and more importantly in a tactical manner. Our divorce checklist aims to give a guide to some areas you might need to consider.

Mistakes at the outset can have major consequences as the case develops but it should also be said that considered actions at the start of a divorce can sometimes lead to reconciliation. Either way, you will need the light of knowledge to guide you and support you along the way.

Here’s our divorce checklist, with all the things you might need to consider:

Your children

  • What arrangements can be made for the children?
  • How will you sort out Christmas, birthdays, holidays and other special occasions?
  • How will the children’s lives be financed?
  • If there are school fees, how will these be paid?
  • How will the grandparents be involved?

Your finances

  • Will you keep, or sell, your family home?
  • Who will live in your family home, if you are keeping it?
  • Where will the other parent live?
  • How will you afford your new living arrangements?
  • How will you divide up your investments and savings?
  • How will you divide up your personal property?
  • Who will have your family car?
  • How will you meet the fees for the divorce?
  • How will you pay your mortgage from now on?
  • What will happen to your credit card debts?

Things you need to do if you’re getting divorced

  • Find out as much as you can about your personal financial situation – i.e. how much your house is worth, how many debts you have, the value of any investments and savings.
  • Think about whether you need to make or change your will.
