North East bucks marriage trend

20th June, 2014

Data published earlier this month revealed that during 2012 there was a five percent increase in the number of marriages which took place throughout England and Wales, compared to the year before; with the figures suggesting that traditional church marriages were back in fashion.

However, the data – published by the Office for National Statistics – have also revealed that the North East of England is bucking the national trend; with the number of marriages within the region declining.

According to the figures, North Tyneside experienced an 11 percent fall in marriages; whilst during the same period South Tyneside and Gateshead saw a 10 percent and nine percent fall in marriages, respectively.

In addition, the latest figures also revealed that Northumberland and Cleveland both saw their marriage rates fall by five percent; with one of the reasons being cited for a decline in marriages within the region being financial concerns.

Whilst the latest figures have revealed the North East is bucking the national trend in relation to marriages; as family law solicitors in Lincoln we understand and appreciate that before, during and after marriage there are a number of family law matters which may need legal advice – which is where our team of solicitors can assist.
